DÍA MUNDIAL DE LA FILOSOFÍA

20 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 2008

Dear Friends of Philosophy,

As every year since 2002, World Philosophy Day continues to be celebrated in 2008, and will this year take place on 20 November.

The Philosophy Programme at UNESCO has great pleasure in enclosing, for your use, the World Philosophy Day 2008 poster in the 6 official languages of the Organization. In the limelight this year is a painting by the Italian artist Sandro Chia.

On this occasion, numerous events will take place in many UNESCO Member States, involving National Commissions, UNESCO Field Offices, Universities, Research Centres, specialized NGOs, high schools, etc. We would be most happy should your institution envisage to mark the Day and would be very pleased to receive the details of any possible activities you may be planning to organize.

For your information, the international event of the Day will take place in Palermo, Italy, on 20 and 21 November 2008. Philosophers, students, journalists, academics, diplomats and other friends of philosophy will discuss in Palermo "Power and Rights", a topic chosen to contribute to debates on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Numerous round tables on various topics will be attended by philosophers from all regions of the world, and other activities are also planned to take place, such as cafés philosophique, exhibitions, a philosophy book fair, etc.

Three activities will also take place at UNESCO's Headquarters in Paris. On 19 and 20 November will be held the 8th colloquium on the New Philosophical Practices; and on 20 and 21 November will be organized a symposium entitled "The Unconscious – Rights – Knowledge". In addition, the centenary of the birth of Françoise Dolto will be celebrated with a symposium taking place from 12 to 14 December 2008.

More information about the Day's activities will be posted starting end of September on our Web site at www.unesco.org/shs/philosophy.

Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions.

With best regards,
